Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy & Montverde Academy
Like no other coach in golf, Gary Gilchrist has truly dedicated his life to the development of young student-athletes. In his storied career, Gilchrist has perfected a world-class training program that has impacted the best junior and amateur golfers for nearly 20 years, including the likes of Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, Sean O’Hair and current Oklahoma State star Morgan Hoffmann, just to name a few.
The key to Gilchrist’s success is his holistic approach to golf, integrating the physical, mental and technical sides of training, ultimately building toward peak performance as it relates to competition. To top it off, Gilchrist incorporates daily state-of-the-art fitness led by legendary trainer Pat Etcheberry and a rigorous academic foundation at Montverde Academy, a leading private college preparatory co-educational institution founded in 1912.
Situated on a pristine 125-acre campus 20 miles from Orlando, Fla., Montverde is a rare quad-accredited international day and boarding school that keeps getting better with age. For instance, the school’s world-class academic standards and state-of-the-art programming, highlighted by extensive Advanced Placement and Honors-Level courses, now offers a new Chen Family International Language Laboratory.
Meanwhile, Montverde’s internationally acclaimed athletics, led by a perennial nationally ranked basketball program and powerhouse soccer and baseball teams, features a leading Equestrian Center and newly unveiled multi-million-dollar, multi-sport athletic complex. Between its high-level academics, athletics and enrichment programming, it should come as no surprise that Montverde regularly matriculates its students to the leading universities, including recent graduates to Harvard, Duke, UCLA, Cornell, Vanderbilt, Wellesley, Georgia Tech and more.
“Montverde Academy was one of the biggest attractions in me coming to Mission Inn Resort,” says Gilchrist, who attended Texas A&M University prior to turning professional in 1987. “The fact it was nearby was valuable. Most of the families investing in their children to come to my academy want them to go to the best Ivy League schools or top NCAA Division I universities.
“GGGA’s not like going to school at some of the other golf academies. We’re building that foundation and understand the importance of what it means to be a student-athlete. Not just at the junior level but at the college level.”
Indeed, and one mark that proves the GGGA-MVA model works is the fact 22 different Gilchrist students won 30 national and international tournaments during the 2009-2010 school year. Plus, more than 20 students made Montverde’s Honor Roll.
As Gilchrist puts it, his highly personal and nurturing academy environment is all about developing the “ultimate student-athlete.” And GGGA’s compelling combination of world-class golf instruction, fitness training, mental coaching and academic excellence is what distinguishes GGGA from any other golf academy in the world.
